Hey, everyone’s doing it, right? And we don’t like being left out. So we got our editors and writers together, locked ourselves in a room and put our heads together. The result is the TD Top 40, our comprehensive list of the 40 best players for the 2013 NFL season—no past, no future, just the present. Next up on the list is…
Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints
- 2012 Stats: 5,177 passing yards, 43 TDs, 19 INTs, 96.3 Passer Rating
- Career Stats: 45,919 passing yards, 324 TDs, 165 INTs, 94.3 Passer Rating
- Drafted No. 32 overall (2nd round) in 2001 from Purdue
We all know the best way to get back at someone is with a kick-ass success story. No one is more proof of that mantra than New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees. Once doubted for his short stature (6 feet tall, maybe), and arm strength, he now holds the record for the most consecutive games with a touchdown pass, with a 54-game streak (a streak that halted in November 2012 against the Falcons). Though passing Johnny Unita’s record is monumental, Brees will be more concerned with breaking into the playoffs in 2013, now that coaching order is restored in NOLA.
Head coach Sean Payton and Brees have been a package deal since joining the Saints. They took the team from a losing 3-13 season in 2005, to a 10-6 record in 2006. That year Brees became the face of the Saints franchise with 4,418 yards and 26 touchdowns. Oh, and that was Brees’ worst statistical season for the Saints in the past six years.
He holds numerous NFL passing records but his most notable came in 2011—the NFL’s single-season record for most passing yards with 5,476 yards. Coming in 300 yards shy of breaking the record in 2012, Brees is showing no signs of slowing down. Brees went from slipping as a first round pick in the 2001 draft, being replaced in San Diego, to being shunned because of a shoulder injury, to one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
With a five-year, $100 million contract extension locked up, visiting the Dome in New Orleans will continue be a nightmare for defenses in the coming years.
