Football is such an American pastime that every team, no matter how good or bad, has its celebrity backers. The Cowboys have LeBron James and legions of other celeb fans that have absolutely no regional allegiance to the ‘Boys, the Giants have most of NY’s glitterati and the Jets have the rest of it—which, in division, is called the remainder.
Houston is no different. One of the Texans’ biggest celebrity supporters is Bun B, the consummate rapper’s rapper and Southern hip-hop legend. Every Sunday, like clockwork, you can catch the Trill OG tweeting about his beloved Texans with the hashtag #BullsonParade, a catchy nickname for the Texans’ defense and rallying cry from the Rage Against the Machine song of the same name.
TDdaily caught up with the UGK representer to get his thoughts on what to expect of the Texans, who have been among the best teams in football for a fortnight, as they gear up for their Week 3 matchup against the Denver Broncos, who were felled by the Atlanta Falcons last night on MNF.
Bun: Most of us Texans fans have been getting a lot of grief. We’ve got a 2-0 record but nobody’s really giving us any credit as a team because of the caliber of the teams that we’re playing. Which is funny because I still think that we’re a great team, we got a lot to show. So I’ve been anticipating us going up against one of these high caliber teams. I think us going against the Denver Broncos is going to be a great test for this team, offensively as well as defensively. This is the beginning of some really strong games for us. We got the Raiders coming, we got the Jets coming, we got the Titans coming, so our schedule is not as weak as a lot of people would like to think. We got some rough games and a lot of them are on the road. But I think this Texans team is ready to show its mettle.
TD: Matt Schaub vs. Peyton Manning. Go!
Bun: I don’t think we need to get into any kind of shootout or anything like that with Peyton. I think Matt plays a more laid back, controlled game. I don’t think he’s going to be trying to gunsling out there against Peyton. I think if we play a good game and we do our job of containing and just play our game, I think we’ll be okay. As long as we don’t try to play their style of play, I think we’ll be fine. We need to get some points on the board early because I don’t want to try to play a comeback game against those guys because that’s going to put us under some unnecessary pressure I think.
TD: The Broncos have stepped it up. Who comes out on top Sunday?
Bun: I gotta give it to us. I feel very confident about this team I think that we’re looking better already this year than we were last year. I think as long as we keep our first string quarterback I think we’ll be fine. Injuries are always going to be a factor that every team has to deal with but our bye week is kind of early in Week 7 so after that we’ll be playing week after week going into the playoffs. I’m concerned about us going out and playing the best ball we can, getting those W’s. We just playing strong ball we got a strong running game with Ben Tate and Arian Foster. I’m not concerned about our defense, I think our defense is one of the best in this league, I think as we go throughout this season, we’re going to show that.
TD: You definitely loved the running game with Arian Foster and Ben Tate. What do you think about Coach Kubiak plan for the run game?
Bun: I think he’s using them the right way. I think Game 2 was an excellent representation of what he plans to do with this running game. I think people understand that Ben Tate is a beast, I know a couple of cats that are kind of upset that they had the nerve to take him off of their fantasy squad for Week 2, which is not a good look because that kid put some numbers on the board. And they’re going to figure out ways to get him more and more involved in the season. I think people should be very, very happy with what Kubiak is doing. I think when we get to running up against a couple of different defensive teams, like the Ravens. I’m very anxious to see what our running game looks like next to the Baltimore Ravens. Their defense is strong, our defense is strong, so at the end of the day, it’s going to come up to a quarterback match. And I think that Matt Schaub is better than Joe Flacco.
TD: JJ Watt is out there doing the Mutombo finger wave batting down balls like a shot blocker. What are your thoughts on him as a player?
Bun: JJ Watt is proving himself to be a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year already. I think the energy that he’s been bringing to this team since the playoff run last year…he’s been a guy that really fires the crowd up, gets Reliant on its feet and gets us pumped. I think he’s doing a good job of firing his guys up in the locker room and in the huddle as well. JJ Watt is the walking embodiment of Texas pride and we just want that guy to get healthy. Get that elbow working right, get that brace off. Just look at what he’s been able to accomplish with an injured left arm. Once this guy is fully healthy and that elbow is working, he’s going to be able to jump higher, he’s going to be able to reach farther, and get his hands on a lot more passes this year. I think we’re doing great. I think Buffalo is a little bit concerned about the mess that they made [Mario Williams], meanwhile the Texans are looking A-1.
